It was built in the 1820's, by sinking a shaft which was then worked outwards. It was one of the first railway tunnels in England, & certainly the first in Plymouth. It's one of the earliest surviving tramway tunnels in the country and has served a variety of different purposes since its construction was completed in the early 1820s.
