WebGenerally there is no way you can guarantee that there won't be overlap with the layout algorithms in igraph. EDIT: apparently igraph has changed quite a bit recently. Try layout_on_grid instead. If it's really important, I recommend exporting your network with the rgexf package and using Gephi for the visualization.
